Latin (Level 1) - January 2020 | MST-03-004 | Monday, 13. January 2020

Latin (Level 1):  
MONDAY 17:00 - 19:00 for 10 weeks
Course Dates: Monday 13, 20, 27 January; 3, 10, 17, 24 February; 2, 9, 23 March 2020 (No class on Monday 16 March)

Learning Objectives:

to develop at an appropriate level a competence in the language studied;

to develop a sensitive and analytical approach to language;

to develop a heightened awareness of the influence of Latin on English and/or Romance languages;

to develop an understanding of grammar which students can apply ultimately to the study of any language;

to read and understand some of the literature in the original language;

to acquire some understanding of the civilization within which the language and literature studied was produced.

Learning outcomes:
On completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate:

an ability to read and understand texts in Latin

an ability to manipulate Latin grammar and syntax, namely gender, number and case, agreement of adjectives, the four conjugations , present and past tenses

an ability to translate from Latin into English and English into Latin

an ability to understand words in English and/or Romance languages which are derived from Latin

Please note: In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must attend a minimum of 7 out of 10 classes.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?
You must be over 18 to attend any Language Centre course.
What are the course fees?
There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --Student fee: £20.00 --Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00
Are these courses accredited?
A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification. Note QUB Students, all Language classes (Languages for Non-Specialist courses) now count towards the University's Degree Plus Award (Route B).  Degree Plus Award is a new award for Queen’s students designed to provide official recognition of extra-curricular activities including Language Centre language courses which are open to all students whatever their degree subject. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this!
How often do I attend?
Classes, which usually last two hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October and again in February.
Is my registration fee transferrable?
Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.
What's the refund policy?
All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing.   Refunds are paid as follows:
Semester 2
Before 3 January – full refund  (less 6% administration fee to Eventbrite) 4 January to 11 January – 50% refund (less 6% administration fee for Eventbrite) No refunds available from 12 January (less 6% administration fee for Eventbrite)
Please note that EVENTBRITE will charge 6% administration fee on all refunds. 
Refunds are not normally paid after the beginning of classes. Any such request must be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion.  All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of 50% of your original course fee.
