Entry level for VTCT Level 4 Sports Massage:



You must have completed the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy or equivalent to undertake this qualification. This includes bridging courses from complementary therapy massage/Swedish massage courses.



Description of VTCT Level 4 Sports Massage:



The VTCT Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy is focused towards those seeking to gain employment as a sports massage therapist providing sports massage to prevent and manage injury.

Through this qualification you will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to apply sports massage methods competently to recent non-acute injury and pre-exisiting conditions.

This will include a range of massage techniques additional to those acquired at Level 3, which include: connective tissue, soft tissue release, corrective frictions, trigger points and muscle energy techniques.

You will develop your subjective and objective assessment skills to include clinical reasoning and the use of a wide range of special and functional muscle test. You will be able to give advice on treatment modalities used to support soft tissue repair at each stage of injury. In addition you will explore a wide range of pathophysiology and acquire a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology through the practical application of the newly acquired objective tests.

This qualification is approved and supported by SkillsActive, the sector skills council for active leisure and learning.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. Learners who complete this qualification will be able to gain employment and obtain insurance to work as a sports massage practitioner. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of settings, including:



- Private health clubs and leisure centres

- Sports centres and clubs

- Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings



This qualifications is different from the VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy since it qualifies you to work with injured clients. The Level 3 qualification is more concerned with pre and post event massage on 'non-injured' tissue.



Additional Info



There are a number of professional associations (PA’s) that offer membership to qualified (postgraduate) sports massage therapists. Individual PA’s often have their own membership entry requirements that can include: • a minimum period of time over which a course/qualification is completed • the method of course delivery • a logbook to evidence learner practice hours • a First Aid qualification • an annual log of continuing professional development (CPD)

This list is not exhaustive and learners are advised to check the requirements of the specific professional association they may like to join post qualification.

Theory, Practical attendance & assessment: 8 days (practical/theory sessions)



Coursework: Home study and portfolio of evidence containing questions and assignment work

Unit USP46 - Conducting subjective and objective assessment



Unit USP47 - Provide Sports Massage Techniques to Prevent and Manage Injury



Unit USP48 - Treatment Modalities to Support Soft Tissue Repair

GLH (Guided Learning Hours): 128. (GLH incl’s. practical, coursework, case studies,

Group training = No, students will work on each other.



One to one training = Yes, you will be required to bring a model along to the practical



training to practice your routine on.



Case studies = Yes, you will be required to work on models for your case studies.
