Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport
The former UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children workshop has been discontinued and replaced with Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport (CWPS), created by sportscotland in partnership with Children 1st to refresh and update the content to reflect changes in society and sport and be more relevant for current coaching practice.
Taking a blended learning approach, the main change is the inclusion of an eLearning (Module 1) which is theory-based, followed by a three-hour ****-to-**** training course (Module 2) that puts the learning from Module 1 into context and practice.
Who should attend
This course is suitable for all adults involved in sports organisations that have participants under the age of 18. It is targeted at all practitioners, ie all coaches and volunteers over the age of 16 working and volunteering directly with children and young people.
Module 1 – eLearning Virtual Classroom
The CWPS eLearning Module 1 MUST be completed by learners before attending Module 2 and can be accessed via the link you will receive in your confirmation of registration email.
NB: At the end of the online module you must make sure that you complete the learner details link to ensure you receive your certificate upon successful completion of both modules.
The aim of the eLearning module is to introduce you to the basic theory, knowledge and practice that underpin child wellbeing and protection in sport and will help you to prepare for the ****-to-**** element of the training.
By the end of Module 1 you will be able to:

Understand what is meant by ‘child wellbeing and protection’
Recognise the value of a child-centred approach to child wellbeing and protection
Identify good practice in relation to child wellbeing and protection and how this impacts the sports environment
Recognise the legislative and policy framework around child wellbeing and protection
Identify and respond to possible child wellbeing or protection concerns
Identify the limits of your safeguarding role and know when to get support

Module 2 – ****-to-**** workshop
The Module 2 workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse and provide you with the tools and confidence to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.
By the end of Module 2 you will:

Be introduced to the Spectrum of Practice and use it to consider, evaluate and respond to common coaching scenarios
Receive an introduction to the factors that create a culture of poor practice
Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching
Explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response
Identify barriers to disclosure
Cover the process for responding to concerns
Put the Responding to Concerns Process into practice to deal with several complex sample cases
