Creativity and Communication: The Secret of East German Censorship | | Tuesday, 29. October 2019

29th Oct: Laura Bradley, Professor of German and Theatre.
(Department of European Languages and Cultures).
Censorship was one of East Germany’s worst-kept secrets. Everyone knew that the arts were censored, yet the word censorship was itself taboo. Professor Laura Bradley will explore how this open secret affected communication and the arts in East Germany: how the authorities developed a euphemistic code to camouflage and justify censorship decisions, and how writers and theatre practitioners found creative ways of alluding to censorship and circumventing restrictions that did not officially exist. Join us for tales of production bans, legal disputes, and concrete poems – glimpses of creativity and communication behind the Berlin Wall.
