FREE - Mental Health Training for Teachers - Bridging the Gap Project | Tuesday, 22. October 2019

We are delighted to be able to share with you the work we are doing across Secondary schools in Scotland to improve mental health and wellbeing.
 
My name is Nicola Ball, and I am a psychotherapist and founder of The Talking Rooms.  One of the core purposes of The Talking Rooms is to provide integrated counselling and evidence-based psychotherapy treatment, mainly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to children and young people, parents/caregivers and teachers, within the school environment.
 
At the moment, children and young people are expected to wait 18 weeks from a GP or school referral before being seen for an initial consultation by a mental health professional at CAMHS.
 
1/3 of children are not seen within that timeframe in Scotland.   
 
I’m sure you’ll agree this just isn’t cutting it for our young people.  This process and the timeline it creates puts undue pressure back onto the school and the teachers.  I’m sure you know exactly what this looks like in your school. 
 
The current process and delays in responding to mental wellbeing creates a breeding ground where small issues become much bigger problems.  With 1 in every 10 young people developing a mental health issue during their school years, a better response is required.  In school terms, that’s roughly 3 children sitting in a class at any given time with a mental health issue or disorder.
 
I know I’m preaching to the converted here – you’ll see, day in day out, how a mental health difficulty manifests and develops without appropriate, professional intervention.  
 
We have started rolling out a project to work in partnership with your school to solve this problem and helps to BRIDGE THE GAP between a referral to CAMHS and the first appointment. We help your young people in REAL time with treatment for a wide range of mental health disorders by a qualified psychotherapist.
 
We are in the early stages of rolling this out in schools, however initial roll out has delivered an 80% improvement on clinical distress, problems, symptoms, functioning and risk/harm.  
 
In addition, the reduction of severe clinical presentations to sub clinical presentations meant that in 9 out of 10 cases, a CAMHS appointment was no longer required.         
 
Numbers aside, I have personally seen a massive transformation in young people who were suicidal, self-harming and whose confidence was on the floor.  Life circumstances hadn’t been particularly kind to these young people, but our work offered them HOPE and the tools and skills they need to navigate life and their own mental wellbeing and health.
