The Psychology of Spiritual Awakening with Steve Taylor | Hyde Park Book Club | Monday, 04. March 2019

What does it mean to be spiritually awakened, or ‘enlightened’? Does the state just occur spontaneously or can we cultivate it? Psychologist Dr. Steve Taylor - author of the best-selling book The Leap: The Psychology of Spiritual Awakening - will show that the ‘awakened’ state is more common than is generally believed. He will highlight some of the main characteristics of the state, including intensified perception, acceptance, gratitude, a transcendence of separation and inner quietness. Drawing on his years of psychological research, Steve will share stories of ordinary people who have shifted into an ‘awakened’ state following periods of intense suffering, such as a diagnosis of cancer, severe depression and bereavement. He will also discuss cases of people who were ‘naturally’ awakened, and expressed themselves as poets and will lead some exercises to help cultivate some of these characteristics of wakefulness, and show that that ‘wakefulness’ is not an unattainable esoteric state but one that can be developed by everyone. He will even suggest that we need to move collectively towards the state of wakefulness in order to live harmoniously as a species.
