23rd May 2020 The Vernon Institute Saughall, Cheshire. | Saturday, 23. May 2020

£25pp. The institute was gifted to the village 100 years ago, but the buildings are, in fact, much older. Geoff Barnsley, chairman of the VI estates and finance committee, said: “We had to replace some of the roof tiles during the restoration. The roof actually had a lime and horse-hair mixture under the tiles which has been in place for more than 200 years.

“Before it was gifted to the village, people even used to pay to take baths here. It was apparently 4d – 2d if you brought your own towel!

“The buildings were even used as a war hospital in the First World War.

“You can still see the changes that were made at the time, such as the addition of French doors to allow nurses to wheel stretchers in and out.

“The wooden annex, which was used as an operating theater at the time, is still there as well.

“It has been, and still is, an absolutely central part of village life in Saughall.”
