Advance HE Professional Development Course for External Examiners | University of West London | Monday, 23. September 2019
The University of West London is delivering the Advance HE accredited Professional Development Course for External Examiners, aimed at both people who are already External Examiners and those who aspire to become EEs. The blended learning approach includes initial online work, followed by a one-day workshop. The focus is on the role of the External Examiner as Guardian of National Standards, maintainer of Academic Standards, process checker and critical friend. It explores the challenges of what we mean by standards and the causes of variability in outcomes. Even if you are not an external, the workshop will help you understand more about how assessment practices should be influenced by national and disciplinary standards, The second part of the course lasts the duration of a day and there are limited places only, so book now.
What will I get out of this?
This professional development course has been developed as part of the Advance HE (previously the Higher Education Academy) Degree Standards Project and aims to assist participants to:
understand the role of the External Examiner as articulated in the UK Quality Code for Higher Education and be confident to undertake it;
develop a deeper understanding of the nature of academic standards and professional judgement, and explore the implications for External Examining;
use evidence-informed approaches to contribute to impartial, transparent judgements on academic standards and the enhancement of student learning.
Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on building understanding through valuing participants’ experiences and prior knowledge, and active participation in the use of a variety of activities (e.g. reading, exercises, discussion).
What is involved in the course?
The two day course is comprised of two parts:
Part 1: Online activities and reading (3 to 7 hours, depending on your previous knowledge and experience). Log in details will be sent to you two weeks before the workshop
Part 2: ****-to-**** workshop (1 day)
After an initial presentation the workshop is interactive and hands-on, and builds on the work undertaken in Part 1. You must therefore complete all the tasks associated with Part 1 prior to attending the workshop.
Is there anything I need to know before I book a place?
UWL and Advance HE are committed to providing inclusive services. We will do our utmost to enable everyone to engage fully in the course. Please contact: email@example.com to let us know of any requirements to enable your participation in the course, such as access to the online (Part 1) or ****-to-**** workshop (Part 2) materials.
On successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Advance HE. This certificate can be used as evidence of development towards Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
