Fabulous Façades – Art Deco Spitalfields | Liverpool Street Station | Monday, 14. October 2019
Come and marvel at some fabulous façades
The 1930s saw a spate of rebuilding – both long-established and newly-created businesses were keen to show they were part of a forward-thinking, no-fuss, motivational future.
There are some really impressive examples in this area of London E1 and you are guaranteed to discover at least one building with your own special "wow" factor. Find out who built these impressive structures and what went on behind the façades.
Along the route you'll see the clean lines of the 1930s applied in various ways to places of commerce, art, health, housing and entertainment. We'll look at tiled shop fronts, glass curtain walls, streamline moderne office blocks, Jazz Age theatres and no-fuss housing. We'll also look at and compare some more recent buildings that echo the period.
The walk begins on Bishopsgate and ends near Aldgate. The exact start/meeting point will be on your confirmation and ticket(s) which will be emailed to you.
It is planned to last 90 mins but due to questions and discussions that ofetn ensue it's best to allow 2 hours.
This tour is often scheduled on the same day as my other Art Deco walks in Shoreditch and The City – please see my other listings

"Thank you so much for such an interesting walk... we really enjoyed it and you introduced us to some beautiful buildings"
"Wow. What a great walk my friend and I had with Jane on Fabulous Facades of Spitalfields. We’ll def do more of Jane’s London Walks.
My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing **** of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area. I design and research every tour myself – and the research never ends.
