'Having a Larb' Thai street food Supper Club | Tottenham | Thursday, 26. July 2018

Having a Larb is a Thai street food supper club based in Tottenham, London set up by Victoria Pummintr.
I first decided to set up Having a Larb because I wanted to showcase a different side to Thai dining; a side that that you don’t really experience when you’re choosing from an a la carte menu and a side that goes beyond the curries and chicken satay that it is sometimes just perceived to be.
Firstly, I want to let you know that I’m not a chef. I work in Fashion and was born into a half-Thai, half-English family. My mum is from Durham and my dad moved to the UK from Thailand in 1974 and has been working as a chef for 40 years.
The Thai food my siblings and I grew up with wasn’t about a fancy three-course meal, it was about the simple rituals of eating and sharing. In the same way, there is a far more relaxed, communal side to Thai dining that we experienced growing up on my dad’s food at home and on family trips to Thailand – whether sitting on my grandparent’s jetty waiting to buy noodle soup in a bag from the local man who used to sail by on his boat, watching my aunty send food in baskets over the river outside her house in exchange for money or just stopping by roadside cafes on long car journeys, food always played a massive role in my youth.
There was no booking ahead, no fancy offering or seating, no VIP section and once it was all sold, that would be that. The food was the means of survival and was cooked by locals, for locals – and it was delicious.
One dish I remember in particular is called Larb, which is a minced meat marinated in spicy, citrusy flavours that can be eaten hot or cold. It was always very exciting for my siblings and I when we ate this as kids at home because you usually put the larb into a lettuce leaf, wrap it up and dip it into sauce. We enjoyed it so much it became a family tradition on birthdays way into our teenage years and whenever we would invite friends over for birthday parties, the response was always, “Is your dad making larb?”
To help set the scene, I've turned my North London living room into one of the roadside restaurants I remember from my youth. Think vinyl gingham tablecloths, pastel-coloured plates and communal tables with small plastic stools. While you’re tucking into your food, feast your ears upon the authentic sounds of Bangkok streets, from bicycle bells to rickety Tuk Tuk motors and street vendors selling delicious food.
Your meal consists of four to five courses for £25 (which includes a free Chang beer or Thai iced tea). The menus will vary each time and will offer a different type of larb at each supper club, with both meat and veggie options. All food served at the supper club is prepared and made fresh on site by me, but you might be lucky enough to get a glimpse of my mum and dad assisting in the kitchen, or my husband Josh who helps transform our home into a Thai street food café.
The love of larb and traditional Thai street food is something my parents have passed onto me, that I now want to share. It isn’t just about feeding you, but having an authentic Thai dining experience of fuss-free but fantastic food, sharing tables with strangers, making friends, memories and having a laugh.
I can’t wait to see you at Having a Larb,
Victoria x
