Trauma and Tension Release Exercises (TRE) class. | Wednesday, 20. April 2016





This is a drop in class which can be attended as a one-off or on a regular basis or occasional basis. The exercises can be learned in a single class, but practitioners often report benefit from shaking with others. The class is suitable for all unless you have epilepsy, seizures, or are currently pregnant. If you are experiencing acute trauma symptoms you might want to consider a 1-1 session which can be more containing.   





Trauma and Tension Release Exercises (TRE) is premised on a biological understanding of how the body holds difficult experience, and how this holding restricts health and happiness. A simple set of stretching exercises are designed to fatigue muscular holding to the point where involuntary shaking or tremoring occurs, which is the body’s way of releasing excess adrenal charge and finding a state of balance in the autonomic nervous system. This self-regulation mechanism can often be seen in animals, but is something that we socialised apes have learned to resist.


The class will include some discussion of the background to the method and how it works, and a chance to share any needs or expectations. Then we will go through the simple exercises and shake, and finally have a chance to feedback our experience. There is a big emphasis on creating safety and teaching the skill of self-regulation in the class, so that you can learn to trust and pace your release process.


TRE can be a useful adjunct to meditation, as it helps us to become more comfortably present to our embodied experience, the basis for establishing mindfulness. At the same time it feeds large amounts of contents rich inner body experience into the central nervous system, promoting plasticity, vitality and a sense of wholeness.

What to bring? We have a ready supply of blankets, bolsters and blankets, so all you need to bring is loose clothing and perhaps a bottle of water. 


Arrival time : please aim to arrive 10 minutes early for the class. We reserve the right to refuse admission to the class after 8.10pm.


Concessions : we offer seniors (aged 65 and over), full time students, NHS staff and the unemployed concessionary rates on drop-in classes.
