PERSPECTIVES | Venture Arts | Clay Workshop with Barry and Michael | Elizabeth Gaskell's House | Thursday, 15. November 2018

As a part of Venture Arts' PERSPECTIVES programme of events and exhibitions, join two exhibiting artists Barry and Michael in a one off workshop exploring their creative practice involving working with text in ceramic.
This autumn 80 learning disabled artists will occupy contemporary and historical venues across Greater Manchester in PERSPECTIVES, a series of exhibitions, happenings and creative exchanges proudly presented by Venture Arts. From 1 October 2018 through to 24 February 2019, artworks developed over the last two years will be unveiled to the public for the first time in a number group shows including themes of collections, text and line, and photography.
PERSPECTIVES will share not only the different perspectives of the artists in terms of their artwork and disciplines but also how they view and exist in the world today as practicing contemporary artists with learning disabilities.
About the artists:
Michael Beard works across various disciplines including painting, illustration and ceramic sculpture. Michael’s artwork enables him to articulate his immense passion for travel. Compulsive writings of names of cities, famous towers and graphical signage and symbols that he identifies in each location, are strong themes in his work. The repetitive overlapping and fluidity of his handwriting conveys Michael’s vigorous energy and speed in which he creates his work.
Barry works consistently with text. The text is artistically important in that it highlights a vision of life in large letters. He draws well, but this project we feel that he has much to offer collaborating artists through the way the text comes from his ideas onto paper, wood, ceramics and metal. This style is visually absorbing. Each new piece he makes gives glimmers of his “WRITTINGS” making the viewer want to piece them together and read more. He often refers to his past in his “WRITTINGS” and in lists things that he has seen on journeys, like “traffic lighters”, and “sttreet lampers” and also things he would like to collect like “dinky toy roaders” and “sweeters”. His style of writing is unique and gives you a real insight into Barry’s journeys through life and fascination with particular objects and people.
The price of this workshop includes stoneware clay and firing and 20% VAT Eventbrite fee. Attendees can collect their finished pieces from Venture Arts' studio two weeks after the workshop.
