Contemporary approaches to deception in performance – a guide to authentic deception and foregrounding its mechanics both in making and presenting performative work
This workshop will not teach you

how to perform magic tricks
how to be a *** artist
how to lie perfectly

However, it will teach you aspects of these allied arts that Tom has found can be exciting, useful and thought provoking when making, devising or creating live performance work for other people.
The aim of this workshop is to allow participants to experience deception in different ways, and understand how to deceive in a meaningful and useful way. In participating you will gain an insight and introduction as to how deception can be used to achieve a sense of presence and authenticity when performing.
There will be a series of group and partner exercises in the workshop. We will perform our findings and explore deception collectively. The workshop is for all people interested in working within performance in new ways.
About Tom Cassani
Tom Cassani is a Performance Artist and Liar. Tom’s practice of deception has developed and transformed over the past four years, manifesting itself in both text and action based performance. He is interested in how he can use elements of deception, misdirection and lying in his artistic practice.
Tom explores what happens when this is applied to text and action simultaneously in performance. Tom has trained in sleight of hand, misdirection and prestidigitation and now use these skills of deceit as an artistic framework to explore truth, honesty, manipulation and fabrication.
