Innovative Considerations Working with Disorders of the Self
Presented by:  Jim ****** PhD, ATR, LPC
This presentation draws on the background in psychoanalytic theory when working with disorders of the self, but expands the framework to include research in psychological trauma, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), and attachment theory. Disorders of the Self is a term largely used by psychoanalytic clinicians and generally refers to personality/character disorders. Practitioners such as James Masterson have articulated a model to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder and other characterlogical disorders. This presentation will briefly review the conceptualization in psychoanalytic object relations theory but then expand the conceptualization informed by IPNB, attachment theory and trauma models. From the conceptualization we will explore interventions that participants can employ in their practice.
